The Hawk Issue
The following is the latest policy from the American Racing Pigeon Union regarding its stance toward the control of predatory, migratory raptors (hawks). It is used with permission and is taken directly out of its Code of Ethics. It is the position of the North Atlanta Racing Pigeon Club to support and adopt this policy and all its mandates as its own.
310.19 While it is common knowledge within the
pigeon racing community that killing, trapping or harassing raptors and
predators is a violation of federal law, the American Racing Pigeon Union, Inc.
makes it position clear.
"The AU does not condone the harassment or unauthorized trapping of hawks or
falcons. Any AU member found guilty in a state or federal court of law of
illegally using a trap for the purposes of trapping hawks or falcons, shall be
barred from flying competitively in any AU-sanctioned race for one year,
followed by five years of probation. If additional violations occur, membership
will be terminated."
The American Racing Pigeon Union, Inc. and its members recognize that all
wildlife is precious and each species and kind fills a particularly unique niche
in nature's interconnected threads of life.
The American Racing Pigeon Union, Inc. further emphasizes its position that
killing, trapping or harassing raptors and/or predators is not condoned. AU
members are expected to support and comply with this direction and all
applicable federal laws.
The American Racing Pigeon Union, Inc. is a self-regulated organization and we
uphold federal and state laws pertaining to migratory birds. We are committed
to remaining in the forefront of pigeon organizations in addressing responsibly
the legal, ethical and scientific/health issues that our sport faces.
